Professor Jean-Charles Fruchart

Professor Jean-Charles Fruchart, 61, is the President of the Supervisory Board. A graduate in Pharmacy from Lille University in 1968 and in Clinical Biology in 1972, he obtained a Doctorate in Biochemistry the same year and in 1974, a Doctorate in Human Biology. In 1973, he was Senior Lecturer in Medicine at Lille University II, and then Professor of Biochemistry in Pharmacy in 1975. In 1989, the National Institute of Health and Medical Research conferred upon him the management of the INSERM 325 division. He became a member of the Academy of Medicine in Paris in 1991.

In 1994, Jean-Charles Fruchart was elected President of the Association of Cholesterol Research (ARCOL)and appointed President of the European Atherosclerosis Society Meeting. In 1997, he was elected President of the Scientific Committee at Lille University II. In 1998, based on his work on transcriptions factors regulating lipoprotein metabolism and on the discovery of the molecular mechanism of action of fibrates, he was awarded the Galien Price, which recognises the most innovative research into new medicines.

In 1999, he is co-founder of GENFIT; he obtained in 2001 the creation of a new INSERM 545 Unit, called “Nuclear Receptors, lipoproteins and atherosclerosis” that he managed until december 2006, before leaving its management to Pr. Bart Staels. In 2003, he received the Gold Medal from the Lorenzini Foundation. In 2005, he was promoted to Officer in the National Order of the Legion of Honour. In June 2006, Jean-Charles Fruchart was elected President of the International Atherosclerosis Society. He is the author of more than 700 scientific articles in the most prestigious international publications. He is also President of the Board of the state-approved Heart and Arteries Foundation.
