Professor Bart Staels
President of the Scientific Advisory Board
Professor Bart Staels, 49, Doctor in Pharmacology from Louvain University (Belgium), Professor at Lille University II, manages since january 2007 the Atherosclerosis Department (INSERM U545, Pasteur Institute of Lille). He began his career in the Metabolic Research United at the University of California (San Francisco, USA) and subsequently as researcher in the BioAvenir Project (Reverse Cholesterol Transport / Atherosclerosis Project) at Vitry-sur-Seine.
Throughout his career, his research has primarily concentrated on the molecular pharmacology of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. In particular, he has studied the role of nuclear receptors in the control of inflammation, metabolism, lipids and glucose homeostasis as well as the implicated transcription mechanisms.
Bart Staels is a member of several scholarly societies such as the European Society of Atherosclerosis (EAS), the International Atherosclerosis Society (IAS), the New French Atherosclerosis Society, the American Heart Association and the American Diabetes Association. He has been rewarded with numerous international prizes. Winner of the EAS “Young Investigator” prize, the CNRS Bronze Medal as well as the Lifetime Achievement Award from the UK Atherosclerosis Society, Bart Staels is the author of over 300 scientific articles and publications.
Co-founder of GENFIT in 1999, Bart Staels is currently scientific research advisor for all programs at Genfit, whether based on proprietary molecules or in collaboration with pharmaceutical industry partners. He is also Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Board.
